Did Joshua Dobbs play himself out of the Steelers backup QB job?

Last season, one of the biggest stories of the preseason was how Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs outplayed Landry Jones for the backup job. He performed so well the Steelers ended up releasing Jones in favor of Dobbs.

But 2019 has been a different story. Dobbs was obviously a better option over then-rookie Mason Rudolph last season but in the 2019 preseason, Rudolph has been the superior player. Their game reps have been very close as the coaches evaluate them both closely. Here’s how their preseason stats break down.

Rudolph: 368 passing yards, 65.1 percent completion rate, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception, 113.3 passer rating

Dobbs: 208 passing yards, 54.5 percent completion rate, 0 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 57.6 passer rating

These numbers are telling. This is as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as you can get considering both guys went against starters as well as reserves and worked mostly with backups on offense.

No one is saying Dobbs will be released. Not a chance of that. But when it comes to which of the two is active on game day, you have to think Rudolph is going to get the nod.

But I want to pass the question off to you. Who should be the Steelers backup quarterback?
