This week, the internet was set alight when gorgeously tall Australian actor Jacob Elordi appeared in a TikTok with Sofia Coppola‘s daughter Romy Mars. Despite the clip being a mere 14 seconds, the video sparked a heap of discourse questioning whether we just saw more personality from the Saltburn actor than we have in his entire career. It’s got me thinking — could the timing of the video mean something? Or am I chronically too deep in other people’s business? Let’s discuss.
In case you missed it, Mars posted a video of her and Elordi dancing to “Top of Cars” by Lil M.U on Sunday (local time). At the time of writing, it has more than 26 million views. The comment section is filled with people who are:
a. Incredible jealous of the 18-year-old.
b. Confused and inspired by how she got the chronically elusive Elordi to participate in her lil’ video.
You see, 28-year-old Elordi has kept his presence on social media pretty minimal. In 2022, the Euphoria star opened up in a profile with GQ about how he gained millions of followers overnight following the release of The Kissig Booth on Netflix. While that may be the dream for a lot of people, for Elordi, it was pretty confronting.
“I had to go through and delete my high school pictures because that was the Instagram that I used for my life. I wish people could understand how drastic that change was. It felt like, all of a sudden, I was a poster. Like I was a billboard,” he said, saying that the newfound attention almost saw him quit acting.
“It might sound quite sensitive and dramatic, but I am sensitive and I’m very dramatic. I hated being a character to the public. I felt so far from myself.”
Even during Elordi’s relationship with Oliva Jade Giannulli — who makes a living from documenting her life on social media — he shied away from the camera. The pair had been linked since 2021, but were reported to have called it quits in August, with Giannulli moving to Paris “for a bit” and being seen going out for dinner with Glen Powell.
Could Elordi’s appearance in Mars’ TikTok be a big fuck you to his ex? After all, if I were in Giannulli‘s position, I’d want to show off my hot, talented boyfriend to my audience.
But hey, I could be totally wrong on more than one count. On Monday (local time), Elordi and Giannulli turned up together at the premiere of his new film, Frankenstein, for the Toronto International Film Festival, where he was papped holding the train of her dress as she walked around the crowd (aw!).
Perhaps they’re still together. Perhaps they’re separated but on good terms. Perhaps I am full of shit. Who knows?
All we know for sure is that Jacob Elordi truly ate in that 14 second video and for that, we salute him.
