Dick Advocaat close to Feyenoord job as Rangers prepare to face former manager in Europe

Dick Advocaat has confirmed he is in discussions to become the new manager of Feyenoord and the 72-year-old could face Rangers in one of his first games in charge.

The Rotterdam outfit, who face Steven Gerrard’s side in the Europa League , parted ways with Jaap Stam this week after a disastrous series of results that saw them nosedive down the Eredivisie.

And they have turned to veteran Advocaat with an announcement expected soon – after the former Netherlands boss confirmed on Dutch radio he was in talks.

He said: "I'm not going to lie about it, I have been approached by Feyenoord.

"There is no agreement yet.

"Feyenoord will make an announcement in due course."

It woud mean a huge change of heart from Advocaat, who denied earlier this month he had any interest in taking over from Stam after he was first put under pressure at De Kuip.

He said: "No. I am not interested in the job. I signed Jaap Stam as a player and I know him very well.

"It's very silly the fans are talking about change. He's only started the job in the summer and it will take a lot of time."

Advocaat left his 22nd job as manager in the summer when he quit as FC Utrecht boss.

He was manager of Rangers from 1998 from 2002, where he famously splashed out a record £12 million fee on striker Tore Andre Flo. Advocaat won two titles with Rangers, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup before going onto being Director of Football briefly.

He's also managed Holland three times, UAE, South Korea, Belgium, Russia and Serbia, internationally as well as AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven twice, DSVP, Haarlem, SVV, Dordrecht, Rangers, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Zenit St Petersburg, Sunderland , Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Rangers visit Rotterdam to face Feyenoord in the Europa League on November 28.
