Dick Advocaat at war with Jaap Stam as ex-Rangers boss butchers Manchester United legend

Fizzing former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat has slaughtered Jaap Stam after the Dutch legend claimed he deserved credit for Feyenoord's revival this season.

The Dutch club enjoyed an excellent second half of the season - after being eliminated in Rangers' group in the Europa League -after veteran boss Advocaat succeeded Stam at De Kuip and the 72-year-old is set to continue next season too.

But Manchester United legend Stam - now in charge of FC Cincinnati in the MLS - insisted he deserved a chunk of credit for Feyenoord's revival. He said: "People do not see what happened beforehand. This is how football is. Another person walks away with the praise.

"Dick Advocaat has got the credit, but he didn't want to come in at the start of the season, did he?"

But that infuriated Advocaat, who stated: "I read the interview with Jaap Stam with increasing amazement.

"The only thing I will say is that Jaap Stam made one good decision at Feyenoord and that was when he left the club."

And that prompted Stam to backtrack. He said: "What Dick says is correct, it was a good decision for me to leave.

"But I didn't mean to attack him personally. Everyone who knows me, knows that I have a lot of respect for what Dick has all achieved as a manager.

"I just wanted to point out that when he arrived, the players were fit and his time of arrival was good. I wish him a great deal of success at Feyenoord."

Advocaat was manager of Rangers from 1998 from 2002, where he famously splashed out a record £12 million fee on striker ToreAndre Flo. Advocaat won two titles with Rangers, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup before going onto become Director of Football briefly.

He's also managed Holland three times, UAE, South Korea, Belgium, Russia and Serbia, internationally as well as AZ Alkmaar and PSV

Eindhoven twice, DSVP, Haarlem, SVV, Dordrecht, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Zenit St Petersburg, Sunderland, Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht, before moving to De Kuip this season.
