Diarmuid Connolly hails Stephen Cluxton as Gaelic’s greatest ever keeper – as speculation persists over his future

Diarmuid Connolly has described Stephen Cluxton as Gaelic’s greatest ever keeper – as speculation persists over the veteran’s position with Dublin.

The All-Ireland champions open up their Championship account at Chadwicks Wexford Park tomorrow and it is not yet known if Cluxton, 39, will be back to attempt to win a ninth All-Ireland medal.

Ciaran Kilkenny’s claim that Cluxton had returned to training after missing the League campaign has been backed up by former Dubs star Connolly.

In his Boylesports column, Connolly added: “For me, Stephen is the all-time best goalkeeper to have ever played football. He is the talisman, the captain, what more can you say about the man?

“He is the linchpin for this Dublin attack. I think teams are still trying to put serious homework into stopping him and Dublin. That’s the measure of the guy, he is something special.”
