Diane Keaton death latest: Woody Allen pays tribute to ‘unique’ Annie Hall star

Beloved actor Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79 in California.

Annie Hall and Manhattan director Woody Allen, Keaton’s frequent collaborator, has hailed the star as “unique” in tribute, while Bette Midler, who starred with Keaton in The First Wives Club, described her as “brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary”.

Keaton’s longtime friend told People that she had become “very thin” in the weeks prior to her death. “I saw her two or three weeks ago,” singer-songwriter Carole Bayer Sager recalled. “She had lost so much weight.”

Other friends also told the outlet that Keaton’s health had “declined very suddenly” in her final months. Her family “chose to keep things very private,” and even some of her longtime friends “weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” one friend told the outlet.

Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s, and starred in classic films such as The First Wives Club and Francis Ford Coppola’s mafia epic The Godfather.

The actor played the role of Kay Adams-Corleone, a role which she reprised in The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III. She also enjoyed a decades-long collaboration with controversial director Woody Allen, and received an Academy Award for her role in Annie Hall in 1978.

She is survived by her two children, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25.

After Keaton asked if she was faking her accent, Witherspoon remembered telling her, “‘No, ma’am. I’m from Nashville, Tennessee, and I’d love to be in your movie.’

What we know about Keaton's cause of death so far

10:57 , Jacob Stolworthy

At the moment, details of Keaton’s unexpected death remain unknown.

So far, it’s been reported that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to Keaton’s home after a call for medical assistance. A person was then transported to the hospital.

An anonymous friend of Keaton had told People magazine that her health had “declined very suddenly” in recent months.

“It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,” they said, adding that it was “heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”

“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private,” the source added. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

Keaton became a single mother of two adopted children in her Fifties

10:27 , Jacob Stolworthy

By middle age, most people are looking to enjoy retirement as empty-nesters, but not Keaton.

The force of nature decided in her fifties to adopt two children, daughter Dexter, now 29, and son Duke, now 25, and raise them as a single mother.

“I was never going to be prepared to be a mother,” she reportedly told the now-defunct Ladies Home Journal in 2008.

“Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist,” she added. “It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”

While she had famously dated Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, and even her longtime collaborator Woody Allen, briefly, Keaton remained unmarried her entire life, by choice.

“I think I’m the only one in my generation, and maybe before, who has been a single woman all her life,” she said, admitting, “It wouldn't have been a good idea for me to have married.”

Keaton explained that being a wife was never something she wanted for herself.

“I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife,” she recalled.

“And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’ I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it too,” she added, referring to her past relationships.

Why was Keaton always wearing a hat and sunglasses?

09:55 , Jacob Stolworthy

Keaton was rarely seen without a hat and sunglasses — a look nearly as iconic as the woman herself.

She credited her mother as her fashion inspiration, once telling People magazine: “She took me to Goodwill and let me express myself. She was my biggest supporter and manifester of my creativity. Later in life my inspiration came from countless hours of cutting and pasting my way through magazines.”

For a look to feature her signature flair, she noted that it had to include “a turtleneck, suit, large belt, and of course a hat and glasses!”

“Some things will never change for me,” Keaton added.

Woody Allen pays tribute to 'unique' Keaton

Woody Allen has paid tribute to his longtime collaborator and one-time girlfriend.

“It’s grammatically incorrect to say ‘most unique’, but all rules of grammar, and I guess anything else, are suspended when talking about Diane Keaton. Unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again, her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered.”

Keaton and Allen briefly dated in 1969 when she auditioned for his Broadway play, Play It Again, Sam, and appeared in several of the director’s films, including Annie Hall, Manhattan, Interiors and Radio Days.

Keaton received numerous accolades throughout her acting career

08:55 , Jacob Stolworthy

Keaton famously landed her first Oscar nomination and Best Actress win in 1977 for her lead performance in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.

But that was just one of many acting accolades she earned over the years.

She went on to nab three more Best Actress Oscar nominations for Reds, Marvin’s Room and Something’s Gotta Give. She also earned two Emmy nominations, one daytime nod in 1990 for outstanding achievement in directing for a 1990 episode of CBS Schoolbreak Special, and a second primetime nod in 1995 for her leading role in the TV movie Amelia Earhart: The Final Hour.

However, before she became a beloved screen actor, known for her wit, uniqueness, and talent, she found success on Broadway in Woody Allen’s 1969 play, Play It Again, Sam.

Her performance landed her a Tony nomination for Featured Actress in a Play.

She was a frequent Instagrammer, often sharing videos and pictures to laud the incredible talent of others.

“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager told People of her longtime friend. “She had lost so much weight.”

Sager explained that she hadn’t seen Keaton as often this year because the Annie Hall star had moved to Palm Springs following the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January.

“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,” Sager said. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost.”
