Diane Blood: 25 years on from mum who conceived dead husband's children

A woman who made history with a landmark court case appeared on ITV's Lorraine this morning.

Joined by her two now grown-up sons, Liam and Joel, Diane Blood chatted to the talk show host about how she won the legal right to conceive a child using the sperm of her deceased husband Stephen Blood 25 years ago.

The sperm was taken from the father when he fell ill with meningitis, and Diane used the argument that Stephen's wishes to have children were always explicitly clear but there was never any written consent due to the circumstances relating to his illness.

Diane revealed the court argued it was illegal to store Stephen’s sperm, not that it was illegal to take it. After a long battle, Diane won her case.

Speaking of the case on Lorraine today, she said: "I think there's probably more interest in the case now as time goes on it obviously gets into more and more history books.

"It's interesting to meet the people who were involved. As time goes on, the interest has gathered momentum in a way that I never expected it would. I didn't really expect to be talking about it so much later."

Lorraine explained that the mum-of-two had to fight to have her voice heard and then also later had to fight to have her husband's name put on both of her sons' birth certificates.

Diane said: "It was tough at the time."

She explained that she had astonishing amounts of public support as she said: "I had huge amounts of letters and cards. We looked at them recently."

One of her sons added: "It was quite strange. I'd always known that there were letters and bits of newspaper clippings. It was strange to sit down and look through what happened at the time."

Fans of the show took to Twitter to share their delight at seeing how well the family were doing 25 years on.

One user said: "#DianeBlood What a force of female she was/is."

Clair said: "Seeing Diane Blood with her two sons has just made my day! Just amazing! always fight for what you want and challenge everything #courage #determination #lorraine"

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV and the ITV Hub
