Diamond couple from Pather celebrating 60 years of marriage say family is everything

A happy Pather couple have been happy celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, and say that their family means everything.

Matthew and Ellen Steppie, both 85, celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary on Saturday, July 18.

The two met at St Bride’s hall in Motherwell when they were both 20, and have been together ever since.

The happy couple are parents to Jim, 59, Maureen, 56, Gerrard, 53, and Matthew 46.

They also have five grand kids and two great-grandkids and say they are one big happy family.

Ellen said: “We are a big family and we are all very, very close.

“Family means everything to us.

“Having the grandkids is just brilliant, they are just great. We get on very well with them both.”

The Diamond couple have been living in their Pather home for 47 years, after previously having lived in Hamilton for a short time before that.

Ellen explained the reasons behind the move.

She said: “We stayed in Whitehill for a while, but my son has asthma and that just wasn’t going to work
out.

“The doctor helped us to get the house in Pather and we have lived here ever since.”

Before he retired, Matthew worked in the steel works for a number of years, including a spell at Ravenscraig.

He was a slater and plasterer by trade.

Ellen worked in a local shoe shop from the age of 16, until she was married at 25 and then brought up her family.
