Dialogue, pressure and absolute commitment: What's going on in the Newcastle takeover

The would-be owners of Newcastle United are continuing dialogue over the potential takeover of the club as efforts show little sign of slowing up.

Discussions about the next steps have taken place as pressure on the Premier League to explain what went on in the 17 weeks the owners and directors test were under consideration continues.

A cross-party letter to the Premier League is the next stage for the Newcastle United Supporters Trust, who have risen to the challenge posed by the consortium to put "pressure" on authorities for an explanation.

And dialogue is continuing behind-the-scenes, with PIF, the Reuben Brothers, PCP Capital and Mike Ashley intermediaries all in regular communication. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League break cover but the sheer weight of pressure on them makes it seem unlikely they will stay silent on the issue.

Although no clear path for the takeover to be approved has been mapped out - indeed the consortium see it as a moving situation which would change with a Premier League intervention - it must be viewed as a positive that they have not disbanded the group or stopped holding regular meetings on the deal.

One source insisted commitment to the deal remains "absolute".

Meanwhile Newcastle are planning for life without a takeover, assessing possible deals and waiting for further guidance from the Premier League before confirming pre-season fixture programmes. Players return next week ahead of the September kick off.

The Magpies' immediate planning is as if the deal will not go through, which means looking at potential loans and free agents as well as utilising a budget crunched by coronavirus.

As of yet there has been no movement from Henry Mauriss' Clear TV group on buying the club but the way is now clear for him to do so.
