'Dialogue on hold' - Bristol City and Leeds United given asking price boosts over Aston Villa's interest in key players

Aston Villa have placed their pursuit of Adam Webster on hold.

The Telegraph's John Percy claim that Bristol City's asking price for the defender means that Villa could well be looking elsewhere in the market.

Villa are keen to strengthen their squad having return to the Premier League, but have struggled to land their transfer targets so far due to being quoted high asking prices.

The Robins are thought to be keen on £30m for Webster and Villa have encountered similar problems elsewhere, such as in their chase for Kalvin Phillips at Leeds United.

Villa are closing in on defender Tyrone Mings in a deal worth up to £26.5m but want to strengthen their back line further.

However, they may well opt to go for out-of-contract Gary Cahill rather than continue what could be a costly pursuit of Webster.

Percy said: "Big issue with fees - Phillips, Benrahma and Webster. Dialogue on hold on those three.

"Mings could move on this week. Cahill is a possibility, but there are other clubs in.

"Villa want eight to nine signings."
