Di'Shon Bernard names Manchester United idol as he reflects on loan move

Young Manchester United defender Di'Shon Bernard says he is looking to emulate fellow academy graduate Axel Tuanzebe in his fledgling career.

Bernard, 20, joined League Two club Salford City on loan last summer and has established himself as a regular in the first-team while playing in a number of different positions.

The young defender was named in the League Two team of the week for his performance against Mansfield at the weekend as Salford kept their play-off dreams alive with just three matches remaining in the season.

Bernard is looking to cap his breakthrough season with victory in a play-off final at Wembley, something which Tuanzebe achieved with Aston Villa at Championship level two years ago.

Although he has struggled for regular playing time this season Tuanzebe has become a first-team squad member after impressing on loan and Bernard is looking to do the same.

“Axel is a good example for me to take,” he told Inside United. “That shows everyone's development is different. He went out on loan to Aston Villa did his thing, came back to United and got a few games under his belt. So he is definitely someone to look up to.

“At the moment, I’m just concentrating on Salford and going into each game so I'm thinking we can get as far as we can. Obviously, next season, I'll be back at United and will go from there really. This league is crucial for me to go into and it has definitely made me a better player.”
