DHS Launches “Self-Deportation” Campaign Featuring Taj Mahal Imagery

In a social media post, the department appeared to advertise free flights to India alongside a cash benefit of up to $2,600 for those choosing to exit the United States on their own. The campaign also referenced China and Colombia, highlighting countries with significant immigrant populations in the U.S.

The programme encourages migrants without legal status to notify authorities of their intent to leave. In return, participants may receive assistance with travel arrangements and a financial payout. DHS officials state that the initiative aims to reduce enforcement costs, ease pressure on detention systems, and allow individuals to avoid legal penalties associated with formal deportation.

However, the campaign has sparked backlash over its use of cultural imagery. Critics argue that featuring the Taj Mahal—one of the world’s most famous monuments—risks trivializing a complex and serious issue. Others have raised concerns that the messaging may unfairly target certain communities, citing potential undertones of racism or xenophobia.

Immigration advocates acknowledge that financial incentives and travel assistance may appeal to individuals in difficult circumstances but warn that such programmes can have long-term consequences. Leaving the U.S. voluntarily under these schemes may still affect a person’s ability to return legally in the future, depending on their immigration history.

DHS has also advised migrants to use the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) app to initiate the process. Through the app, individuals can register their intent to leave voluntarily, submit their personal details, and access information about travel assistance and the financial incentive offered under the programme.

The campaign highlights the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to manage undocumented migration, while raising debates over the ethics and effectiveness of using cultural imagery and financial incentives in immigration policy.
