Crackdown on Amritpal Singh: Dhindsa-led delegation meets guv, accuses Punjab govt of implicating Sikh youth in false cases

CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) has accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government of "misusing" police for implicating the youth of the state in "false cases" since March 18 – the day when Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh escaped from Jalandhar after a crackdown was launched against him.

A delegation led by SAD (Sanyukt) president Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa submitted a memorandum to the Punjab governor on Saturday, alleging that the rule of law in the state was being violated by the AAP government headed by Bhagwant Mann.

The government has left no stone unturned to "finish" the Sikhs and Sikhism, they alleged. Since March 18, the chief minister of Punjab went a step ahead, and by misusing police administration, Sikh youths are being implicated in false cases and there is every apprehension an era of fake encounters, as was done in late 90’s, will be revived in Punjab, read the memorandum.

To create fear in the minds of people, the state government called in 18 companies of security forces, a step which will cause an extra financial burden of about Rs 1,500 crore per annum, the SAD (Sanyukt) added.

It further stated that before coming to power, Mann had promised to release the prisoners who had completed their sentences. However, it is surprising that the state government instead of releasing prisoners like Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar and others is adding to the number of ‘Bandhi Sikhs’.

The delegation also took up the issue of inaction in the Kotkapura firing incident.

The delegation urged the governor to direct the state government to work as per the Constitution of India and to immediately stop implicating Sikh youths in false cases. Those arrested in false cases should be released from jails immediately, they insisted.
