Dhinakaran wants panchayat chiefs’ powers to be safeguarded

The AMMK general secretary, T.T.V. Dhinakaran, on Thursday complained that the powers of presidents of village panchayats, as envisaged in the Panchayat Raj laws, were getting “eroded” as the State government was using block development officers (BDOs) and panchayat union chairpersons for carrying out works of village panchayats.

In a series of tweets, he said it was against democracy that the DMK was “desperate” in making gains through the concentration of power with officials. He sought the intervention of the Chief Minister to see to it that village panchayats’ presidents functioned freely.
