DFS confirms plan to move into former Laura Ashley and Harveys stores at Giltbrook Retail Park

More than a dozen jobs will be created by furniture giant DFS as the firm confirmed plans to move into two vacant units at the Giltbrook Retail Park.

The retailer is expected to operate from units previously occupied by Laura Ashley and Harveys and Bensons and will be merged into one.

A proposal for the project was approved by Broxtowe Borough Council for external alterations to be made to the two empty shops to facilitate the merger.

Now, a separate application, submitted on behalf of DFS Trading Ltd, has been tabled to create a "mezzanine area within the newly combined retail unit", to allow DFS to move to the site.

Planning documents state: "The development is proposed in order to meet the operator requirements of DFS who are seeking to occupy the vacant units 7 and 8 at Giltbrook Shopping Park, which are to be combined to form a single retail unit under separate permission which was recently granted.

"The proposed development is therefore considered to comprise a sustainable form of development, complementing the existing range of uses at Giltbrook Shopping Park and supporting an improved choice and variety of choice at an established retail destination.

"It is demonstrated that the proposed development would represent further investment in the area, supporting the re-occupation of a vacant retail unit and creating a range of economic benefits including the creation of 14 new jobs in a sustainable, accessible location."

A range of full and part-time positions are expected to be created, with further job opportunities during the construction phase.

Councillor Shane Easom, who represents Kimberley for the Conservatives on the borough council, said: "It's a positive story, it's the sort of thing we want to see.

"I just hope we can get some money into the high street after the coronavirus and we can get those up and running.

"It's another offering really, if you were opening something that directly impacted on the local high street we would have to think about it - but this does not.

"It sounds to me it can only be good."

A spokeswoman for the borough council said: "The planning application is due for a decision by 24th April."
