Former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant won’t be playing for the New York Giants — or any other team — for the foreseeable future. Bryant claims he’s not interested in playing in the NFL at the moment.
“This exactly why I don’t have no interest in playing football right now,” Bryant tweeted. “I have not reached out to no organization trying to play … People forget real quick we are still human.. My anxiety and depression came from this type of stuff… What I realized nobody care but me.”
The 30-year-old Bryant later clarified that he was not completely done with football, just taking some time to heal from surgery on the torn Achilles tendon he suffered last year after signing a flier with the New Orleans Saints.
Bryant’s market has been cold for two years now. He was not a hot commodity before the Saints signed him to a one-year, $1.25 million deal last November. Bryant suffered the Achilles injury just two days afterward, ending his season.
The former 2010 first-round pick out of Oklahoma State has not played a game since 2017, when he was with the Cowboys. The Giants are seeking any and all help at wide receiver after the recent spate of injuries and the suspension of Golden Tate, but bringing in Bryant, who is only a shell of what he once was, is not worth the baggage that comes with him.
The Giants will tough it out with the players they have. Sterling Shepard (thumb) is expected to be ready by the season opener, and Alonzo Russell, Russell Shepard, Cody Latimer and Benny Fowler might just be up to snuff to get the Giants through their woes.
