Dez Bryant hopeful for NFL return, continuing to train after recovery

Dez Bryant is nearing the end of his road to recovery from last year’s Achilles injury. Bryant said on his official Twitter account that remaining healthy is his only concern and that the next three weeks will be critical for him. That lines up with the mid-October timeline he referenced earlier this year.

The three-time Pro Bowler, now 30 years old and two years removed from football, looks to be in great shape. Bryant has been training with David Robinson, a specialist in kinesiology who lists wide receivers Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, Sterling Shepard and Rashard Higgins among his clients. It’s tough to come up with a stronger stable of route runners in the NFL than those playmakers.

Whether the Saints will really have any interest in reuniting with Bryant — who signed with them last November but was injured two days later — is unclear, but he’s hoping for it. Bryant was apparently rooting for the Saints to beat the Cowboys on Sunday night two weeks ago (calling out the officiating in the process) while saying publicly that he feels he owes the Saints another try after they gave him an opportunity last season.

Saints coach Sean Payton was lukewarm on the prospect of re-signing Bryant, saying before April’s draft that “I wouldn’t be able to forecast the future.” Considering the Saints’ struggles to find a receiving threat to partner with Michael Thomas, it would be understandable if Payton changed his tune once Bryant is cleared to play again.
