Dexter Lawrence on contract extension: ‘This is where I want to be’

Headed into the offseason, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the New York Giants would pay Dexter Lawrence big money. The only question was when.

That came on Friday as Lawrence officially signed his contract, making him one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in the NFL.

When the contract negotiations were lingering, Lawrence remained absent from voluntary workouts last month. However, for the man nicknamed ‘Sexy Dexy,’ remaining with the Giants was never in doubt.

“Yeah, through the whole process, I was like, ‘I want to play here, I want to be a Giant,’ through the whole process. We have something going here, we’re building something special, and you can see it from the outside, and inside it’s even more beautiful. I’m excited for what’s going on. Like I said, the whole process I was in communication like, ‘this is where I want to be,’ and we got it done,” Lawrence told reporters while sporting an NY tattoo.

Lawrence’s desire to continue playing for Big Blue is a sentiment to the culture instilled by the combination of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

After returning to the team facility on Friday, Lawrence was spotted embracing the Giants’ general manager and head coach.

Lawrence was picked 17th overall in the 2019 NFL draft — a pick acquired in the infamous Odell Beckham Jr. trade. Following his breakout season where he was arguably the Giants’ best player, Lawrence got a lucrative deal this week.

Following the surprising success of last season, the Giants suddenly have fans excited about what’s to come in the future. There is no doubt, as the Giants continue to build their roster, Lawrence is a valuable asset to retain and build around.
