'Devoted nan' with 'huge heart' dies in hospital after suspected gas explosion

A woman who was severely injured in a suspected gas explosion last week in Everton has died from her injuries

Maria Lynch, 62, was rushed to hospital with severe burns when the explosion tore through her house on Thomaston Street, Everton last week. 

The grandmother of six died on Sunday at Whiston Hospital surrounded by her family after hospital staff battled to save her. 

The exact cause of the explosion is currently unclear.

The ECHO understands that the explosion occurred while Mrs Lynch was in her bathroom at her house, sometime around 9am on Thursday 21 November.

Family have described Maria as a "devoted nan, mum, and wife" with a "huge heart".

Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation into the incident.

Today police confirmed that the 62-year-old woman who was injured in a gas explosion last week had died from her injuries.

The force also confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances that caused the explosion is ongoing and that police are working with the Health and Safety Executive.

A spokesperson for Health and Safety Executive said: "HSE has begun an investigation into the accident."

Cadent Gas, the company which operates the gas network running below the street, has said that it is working to "establish the facts of what happened".

Jenny Moten, Director of Cadent's North West Network said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the resident, who we now know has sadly died. I have sent my sympathies and offered support to her family.

"We are assisting the Health and Safety Executive and emergency services as they investigate the circumstances and establish the facts of what happened. It is too early to say what caused this incident."
