Devontae Dobbs is right where he’s supposed to be

With the official National Signing Day now in the books, Michigan State has it’s 2019 recruiting class set.  SpartansWire revisits our coverage, analysis, and commentary on the group of players that committed on Early National Signing Day with thoughts on individual players and the class as a whole.

On June 29th, SpartansWire let it be known that we were fans of Devontae Dobbs.

Here’s what we had to say about Dobbs back in June –

https://spartanswire.com/2018/06/29/it-felt-like-michigan-thought-they-were-superior-and-the-big-boss-to-michigan-state/

It’d be hard for any Spartan to not love this kid after he said this:

“It felt like Michigan thought they were superior and the big boss to Michigan State.”

Keep in mind, Dobbs said this in June, months before Michigan had managed to earn its fourth win against Michigan State in twelve years.

Kind of astonishing – yet also not at all astonishing and actually quite expected from the people over there.

Devontae Dobbs earned our admiration with the quote – and the admiration transitions into something more substantial when we stop and realize that he’s a 5-star recruit who stands 6’3″ and goes about 295 pounds.

If Spartans are asked to name the greatest offensive lineman to have played for Michigan State over the last thirty years or so, most probably name Flozell Adams.

As a Spartan, Flozell was listed at 6’7″ and 335 pounds – so, anyone who is lured into comparing Dobbs to Flozell will have to acknowledge that there is a size discrepancy.

Having said that, I don’t think any Spartans are “worried” about the size of Dobbs.

He’s a large young man.

Dobbs could have played college football anywhere he wanted.

He chose to play at Michigan State because he’s felt “at home” from the moment his recruitment process started.

Here’s what we’re saying about Devontae Dobbs in December –

This monster is going to be sensational and has a chance at becoming a guy who is mentioned in the same breath as Flozell Adams.

Welcome to the Michigan State experience, Devontae.

We’re looking forward to seeing you contribute to the immediate improvement of the offensive line, the immediate re-establishment of the ability to pound the ball, and the immediate improvement of the offense’s ability to capitalize on redzone opportunities.

And we’re looking forward to seeing you anchor an offensive line for the next several years while helping the Dantonio Era Spartans win more Big Ten Championships.
