Devon Toews' first NHL goal gives Islanders overtime win over Blackhawks

NEW YORK _ Mathew Barzal certainly played like an All-Star on Thursday night.

A day after the Islanders' 21-year-old center was named to his first NHL All-Star Game, he scored twice and extended his point streak to six games in a 3-2 overtime win over the Blackhawks at NYCB Live's Nassau Coliseum before a crowd of 13,454, which was just shy of a fourth straight sellout at the venerable barn.

Rookie defenseman Devon Toews, with his first NHL goal, won it at 1:48 of the extra period.

"The last two years I've been here, this is the most confident I've felt," said Barzal, who has eight goals and three assists in his point streak and has scored seven of the Islanders' last 13 goals. "I'm just going into every game feeling like we can win."

The Islanders (22-13-4) have won eight of their last nine and matched their season high with their fifth straight win. Their last six-game winning streak came at the conclusion of 2016-17.

Robin Lehner made 19 saves as he won his sixth straight decision while Collin Delia stopped 47 shots for the Blackhawks (15-21-7).

Patrick Kane tied the game at 2 with a power-play goal from the right at 5:01 of the third despite the Blackhawks being outshot 18-3 in the period.

The Blackhawks, who won three Stanley Cups from 2010-15, are going through a tumultuous season as Joel Qunneville, second on the NHL's all-time list with 890 coaching victories, was fired and replaced by former Islander Jeremey Colliton on Nov. 6.

They entered the game tied for the third fewest points in the league.

"It's been a process," Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. "There are quite a few things, mostly defensive, we've had to adjust to. I'm so used to playing the same way, your own patterns as a player are kind of ingrained in your mind."

Islanders coach Barry Trotz warned his team of avoiding a "trap game" after Saturday night's emotional 4-0 win at Toronto, the first time the team has faced ex-captain John Tavares, and Monday night's 3-1 win at Buffalo as Lehner faced the Sabres for the first time since signing a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Islanders.

"You don't play the game by the standings, you play it on the ice and, right now, Chicago is playing very well," Trotz said.

The Islanders held a 14-3 shot advantage in the first period and took the game's first five shots yet it was the Blackhawks who took a 1-0 lead at 3:05 as Dominik Kahun, to Lehner's left, backhanded in the rebound of Brandon Saad's deflection.

Barzal tied the game at 1 at 6:47 of the first period with his own rebound goal as he swatted the puck out of air from low in the left circle after Delia stopped Anthony Beauvillier.

Delia did deny Leo Komarov's short-handed breakaway at 11:55.

Barzal's power-play goal at 18:56 of the second period _ he had drawn a holding penalty on Gustav Forsling at 18:35 _ gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead as he connected from below the left circle after defenseman Nick Leddy had his initial shot partially blocked.

The Islanders thought they had gone ahead 2-1 at 13:40 of the second period as Cal Clutterbuck knocked in the rebound of Matt Martin's shot off the right post after defenseman Ryan Pulock missed with a hard slap shot. It was ruled a good goal on the ice but, upon review, overturned because of a high stick.
