Devin McCourty likes Jerod Mayo as a coach, despite teasing him daily

Jerod Mayo is taking a crack at coaching in the NFL after spending eight seasons as a linebacker for the New England Patriots.

He stayed with New England as the inside linebackers coach, and there are some unique aspects of coaching a team that you recently played for. To begin, the players are a lot more familiar with him as a linebacker than a coach. So, they are taking advantage of that and making fun of him as much as they can.

Devin McCourty told reporters after the Patriots training camp practice on Thursday that they routinely make fun of him.

“Oh I make fun of him all day,” McCourty said. “I mean, he’s a rookie coach, so you get a rookie coach in here. I ask him, does he have to clean the coaches’ locker room? All those little things.”

McCourty is only two years younger than Mayo and they spent six seasons playing together. McCourty has plenty of respect for Mayo though — and he’s quickly becoming one of the fastest learning Patriots’ coaches.

“But he’s been awesome,” McCourty continued. “Just having him out here – high energy as a player, even more energy as a coach. So it’s been a pleasure I think for all our players just to have him around the locker room.”

Mayo continues to cement his legacy in this New England dynasty — and the Patriots will reap benefits from having him around — even he gets made fun of every once in a while.
