Devils' Taylor Hall clutch in shootout win over Hurricanes

NEWARK, N.J. _ Taylor Hall had been dominant all game, the best player on the ice not a goalie.

"He's always at a different level," Devils defenseman Damon Severson said. "He can skate with the best of them. He can move the puck, he can make plays. He's a fun guy to play with."

Yet, until Hall took his turn in the shootout, he had just an assist to show for his great game.

But Hall deposited his shootout attempt to clinch the Devils' 3-2 win over the Hurricanes on Tuesday night at Prudential Center in what became a great goalie duel.

The Devils (6-3-3), who won at Carolina, 4-1, on Sunday, still have not lost in regulation at home (5-0-1). The game was just one of four home games for the Devils in November.

"It was our first divisional games," said Devils goalie Cory Schneider, who made 31 saves. "It was critical that we came home and held home ice after getting a big road win."

Cam Ward stopped 39 shots for the Hurricanes (3-5-4).

P.A. Parenteau, who had opened the scoring on the rush at 16:50 of the first period off assists from linemates Travis Zajac and Hall, scored on the Devils' first shootout attempt while Schneider stopped both Jeff Skinner and Jaccob Slavin.

"We felt like we got a win the last game we played but we had a little bit better to give," said Hall, who had three shots in a team-team 25:54 of ice time. "It seems like our line is playing well. We've shuffled through a lot of lines so far this year and to find some consistency is a good feeling."

"He's fun to play with," Parenteau added of Hall. "He's flying. He's tough to defend and Travis is making good decisions with the puck. We have a good thing going. Hopefully we can keep it going."

The Devils tied the game at 2 on rookie Nick Lappin's first NHL goal as he slammed in the puck from the doorstep at 3:51 of the third period after linemate Sergey Kalinin cut to the crease from the right and put a one-handed shot on Ward. The goal survived a video review after Hurricanes coach Bill Peters challenged that Vern Fiddler had interfered with Ward.

"Our resiliency in the third period," Devils coach John Hynes said when asked what he liked about his team's performance. "I thought we had some pushback, where we had lost a little bit of momentum in the second period. I thought on the first shift, Zajac's line did a great job of setting the line of how we played."

The Devils played a dominant first period, outshooting the Hurricanes, 18-7, but the Hurricanes scored the only two goals in the second period.

The Hurricanes tied the game at 1 on Jordan Staal's power play goal at 4:23, their first man-advantage goal in five games. That became a 2-1 lead for the Hurricanes at 17:31 as Klas Dahlbeck, at the left point, sent in a quick, rising wrist shot that seemed to take Schneider by surprise.

Schneider actually kept the Devils close in the second, leaving Jeff Skinner to slam his stick against his thigh at 3:40 as Schneider stopped his open slap shot from the right circle. And right after the Hurricanes had tied the game, Schneider kept it even by stopping Elias Lindholm bursting into the Devils' zone from the left at 4:54.

And at 18:12 of the third period, he made a sprawling glove save on Sebastian Aho.

Meanwhile, Ward kept the game even at 2 at 11:25 of the third period as he made a pad save on as Parenteau, open cutting to the crease, was fed by Hall from the right corner. He also sent the game to the shootout by stuffing Zajac at the crease with less than five seconds left in overtime.
