NEWARK, N.J. _ The Devils can take two big lessons away from the first month of play: Kyle Palmieri is an unbelievable weapon, but they need more than just Palmieri in the waning the minutes of games.
The biggest lesson? The Devils are still learning how to close games.
A third-period lead quickly disappeared on Thursday night against the Nashville Predators, but this time the Devils managed to salvage a point in a 4-3 overtime loss at Prudential Center.
Palmieri assisted on three goals and nearly scored twice in the third period, but was denied by Predators' goalie Juuse Saros on both occasions.
Instead, the Devils, who were looking for a response after two straight losses, gave up the lead. With 6:20 left Filip Forsberg beat goalie Keith Kinkaid from the left circle to tie the game at 3. Kyle Turris scored with 1:25 left in overtime to hand the Devils their first overtime loss of the season.
The Predators had an answer for every strike. After going up in the second, a bad line change resulted in a turnover that went back the other way and a goal by Viktor Arvidsson to tie the game at 2.
Just 40 seconds later at 13:46, Palmieri found the leaning stick of Nico Hischier in the slot and Hischier finished off the feed to break the tie.
It was Hischier's second goal of the game and his second multi-point game of the season. His first goal came on the power play with just under a minute left in the first period when he redirected a shot by Hall.
Damon Severson scored his second goal in as many games three minutes into play but Yanick Weber sniped one from long range to even things up at 1-1 at 14:40.
Late in the game, Blake Coleman nearly put it away with a short-handed goal but was turned aside on the breakaway by Saros. Forsberg scored 28 seconds later.
Hall was none too happy to be slapped with his second penalty of the night in the second period. A delayed penalty was called with 7:48 left before the intermission as P.K. Subban lost went down near the corner in the Devils' zone. The penalty went to Hall, who was livid as the replays above him clearly showed that he had broken from Subban before the defenseman went down. Hall never touched him.
The penalty was reviewed and waived off.
