NEWARK, N.J. _ Cory Schneider was booed off the ice early in the first period, but by the end of the game, it was as if he had never played.
The Devils rallied back from a 4-1 deficit against the Las Vegas Golden Knights with goals from Kyle Palmieri and Brett Seney in the third period to take Schneider off the hook for what would have been his 19th-straight regular season loss.
While Schneider was unable to snap his streak, the Devils snapped a big one of theirs when Nico Hischier crashed the net and scored early in overtime to give them their first overtime win in seven tries. Hischier's goal 41 seconds into overtime gave New Jersey a 5-4 win over the Golden Knights.
Vegas challenged Hischier's goal for offsides, and players were taken out of the locker room while the video was reviewed. But the call stood and the Devils skated off victorious.
Schneider, who is still looking for his first win since Dec. 27, 2017, didn't exactly get much help from the skaters in front of him early on. Their resurgence came in the last 2/3 of the game with Keith Kinkaid in the net when they scored three times to cut Vegas' lead to one.
They outshot Vegas 29-11 in the second and third periods and capitalized on the power play, but it was an effort absent from the opening minutes when Schneider was between the pipes.
Palmieri scored his 17th of the season with an unassisted wraparound 6:24 into the third. Seney was credited with the game-tying goal with 5:05 left to play. Nick Holden banked the puck off William Karlsson's skate and into the net to tie the game at 4-4 and finish off a goal-mouth scramble.
Miles Wood, who has been producing at a much slower pace than last season, scored his first home goal of the season 10:21 into the second when Blake Coleman set him up in the slot. Zajac had the secondary assist to give him two points on the night.
Zajac briefly made it 3-1 in the second period when he converted on the power play from the slot for his 10th goal of the season one second shy of three minutes into the frame, but Karlsson scored his second of the night 58 seconds later to make it 4-1.
New Jersey's trend of poor starts continued on Friday when Alex Tuch went to his backhand on the wraparound 1:19 into play. Karlsson gave the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead when he tapped home a sweet feed from Jonathan Marchessault at 7:45.
Less than two minutes later, William Carrier dropped the dagger on Schneider. It was a fluky play that ultimately chased him from the game.
Coming down off the rush, Carrier put the puck on net intending to start a play. Schneider gloved it easily but dropped the puck and slid five-hole. It was a sloppy mistake by a goalie who is walking an extra-fine line right now and not at all uncharacteristic of the bad puck luck Schneider has been the victim of.
Schneider stopped 3 of 7 shots he faced. Kinkaid, who is slated to start Saturday night in Nashville against the Predators, made 14 saves.
