Devil Wears Prada screenwriter defends Andy's 'awful' pals - and fans are fuming

If you've ever watched The Devil Wears Prada, then you'll know a few things are certain.

Meryl Streep is an incredible actress, you do not under any circumstances take public transportation and florals for spring are definitely not groundbreaking.

You might also be aware of the fact that Andy's (Anne Hathaway) so-called friends in the movie are the absolute worst, for always criticising her career choices - but being excited about her designer work perks.

However it seems that the film's screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna doesn't agree, in fact she thinks we're all mistaken about her friends and that it is Andy who is in the wrong.

She says Andy went down the wrong path at Runway (Barry Wetcher)

Meryl Streep's Devil Wears Prada character wasn't actually based on Anna Wintour

In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, McKenna spilled her thoughts.

She said (of Andy): "She's the one who says she's a serious journalist. She's the one who tucks her serious articles into her folder. She's the one who wants to write about the janitor strike.

"And she just shoves all of that out the window very easily."

McKenna says Andy was the real hypocrite of the film (20th Century Fox)

The writer, who has been working on the CW comedy, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, adds that it is in fact Nate who "gets the worst of it".

"He's just pointing out that she's being a hypocrite, which she is," continues McKenna.

"She's being a hypocrite and he's right at the end. She goes to apologise to him because he was right. She was selling herself out and going down the wrong path."

Fans of the movie aren't impressed with these comments and have taken to Twitter to say so.

One person commented: "TRAGIC. As a journalist I tell McKenna, you can be a serious journalist and write about serious issues like Palestine and like fashion at the same time. You can write for NY Times and for Vogue at the same time. Andy could be both and be great in both.

"Her friends were awful and unsupportive and that's not a question."

Another replied: "The real devil in Devil Wears Prada is Andy's s***** boyfriend and unappreciative friends."

A third simply said the screenwriter was "wrong".
