Devil Jam Beginner’s Guide – Sins, Abilities & More

Devil Jam is a fun game similar to Vampire Survivors with certain unique twists. Since there are different mechanics in the game that makes it overwhelming for newer players, follow our Devil Jam beginner's guide to survive the hordes and become the ultimate musician.

How to Choose Your Sins

There are multiple sins that help you throughout your runs in the game. Every run, you will get different options, so you'll have to choose which ones you want to help you. If you accept help from three different sins, others won't help you since you've pledged to those other three.

While you might be enticed to go for the ones that appear first, you can always reroll the sins by using your reroll tokens. Don't worry if you run out of tokens, you can always make a deal with the devil to get more.

Best Abilities to Invest in Early

The game has tons of different abilities that make every run feel unique. Depending on what build you are going for, you should invest in those abilities. Usually, going for skills that have a knockback or fire multiple projectiles will come in handy.

Plus, you should get buffs as well, which increase the number of projectiles or the area of your abilities. Some of the best abilities you can get early are:

Ability Description
Green Serpent Vipers slither from your shadow and poison enemies
Ball & Chain Throws a fireball that comes back to you after one beat
Keep Your Distance Periodically knocks enemies back and applies vulnerable

How to Place Your Abilities

Devil Jam has an interesting mechanic where your character uses abilities left to right in each column. There are three total columns where you can place your abilities, and they will be used in that order. This makes it important to place them correctly.

You will want to place your stronger abilities near the start of each column and the rest accordingly. Since there are various buffing skills, you need to place them in a spot where they buff your powerful abilities (so usually ahead of them). You'll also notice that your skill inventory has a few amplified slots that give +10% damage to any skill placed on it.

How to Get HP

Since you are always surrounded by enemies, chances are that you will get hit and lose HP. To counter this problem, you can roam around the map and find small items lying around, like a milkshake or a pie. Picking those up will allow you to get back your HP that you lost.

On the other hand, certain buffs allow you to get HP regeneration that will heal you constantly when not taking damage. Usually, these buffs cost your maximum health, but they have more advantages than downsides.

How to Win Runs

One thing you should keep doing in Devil Jam is that you should always be moving around the map. Staying still will quickly allow the horde to overrun you and deplete your HP. There's a minimap on the top right where you'll see all interactable spots.

These are spots spread across the map where you can get bonus buffs to make your character stronger. While most of these buffs aren't permanent, you can use them to clear tough enemies like minibosses. There are some spots, however, like the Tribute to the Fallen, where you can gain permanent buffs at the cost of HP. I suggest going to that location when you aren't at risk at losing a lot of HP from enemies and you have some breathing room to boost yourself.
