Developers working on 800 homes near Wetherby Racecourse still face transport troubles

Developers drawing up highly controversial plans to build 800 homes near Wetherby Racecourse are still working on a solution to their transport problems.

Taylor Wimpey has applied for planning permission to construct hundreds of houses, a school, a supermarket and a park next to Racecourse Approach, but the plans have outraged people living near the site and hundreds have objected.

In August 2019, Leeds City Council's city plans panel said it would grant outline planning permission if the developers altered the plans to ensure people can get to the site via York Road.

The decision was made after Highways England stated "it would not be appropriate" for all traffic to access the massive development via Carr Lane, even if the road is upgraded.

After various discussions, the developers announced they were looking to build another access road on a piece of land on the south-west edge of the site, but those plans have been scrapped after the landowners pulled out.

The developers are now looking to construct a bus lane that connects the site to York Road.

The council's city plans panel will hold another discussion on the controversial proposals at a meeting on Friday, January 30.

If planning permission is approved, Taylor Wimpey will be required to ensure 35 per cent of the new properties are affordable.

The developers will also have to contribute £150,000 a year to the running of a shuttle bus that can be used by residents, and spend thousands of pounds on improving several nearby roads, including Racecourse Approach and Harrogate Road.

But objectors say the site is not suitable for a large development and hundreds of new homes will lead to more congestion and pollution on surrounding roads.
