Developers withdraw plans to build office block behind Tramshed in Cardiff

Developers have withdrawn plans to build a four-storey office block right behind the Tramshed music venue in Cardiff.

Last summer plans for a seven-storey building with offices and flats in the same location caused concern the venue would have to close.

DS Holdings, the developers and landlord at the Tramshed, then revised the plans in September down to just four storeys and with no apartments. You can read more about the planning row here.

But last week they withdrew their planning application, and are now no longer currently applying for permission from Cardiff council for a building behind the Tramshed.

Planning agents Asbri Planning representing the developers were asked to comment. It’s unclear if they intend to apply again for planning permission for a separate development.

Tramshed, on Pendyris Street in Grangetown, opened in 2015 in a century-old Grade-II listed building which was a previously derelict tram depot. It also includes offices for start-ups and a yoga studio.

The plans for a seven-storey building last summer prompted many objections from members of the public, local councillors, and the music venue itself. In a statement last year, Tramshed general manager said the plans could cause the venue to “close imminently”.

Tramshed was also asked to comment on the developers withdrawing the latest plans.

Grangetown councillors Ashley Lister and Lynda Thorne objected to the plans last summer over fears it would mean overdevelopment of the site and a negative impact on traffic and congestion.

The site where the office block was planned is currently a vacant plot of tarmac, used for service vehicles to access Tramshed.
