Developers want to build apartments at former Beeston pub site

Developers want to knock down a building on the site of a former Beeston pub and build new apartments there.

They have applied for permission to demolish a two-storey building currently occupied by Nimboo Bar and Restaurant, in Villa Street, where the Royal Oak Inn once stood.

A new four-storey building is planned in its place with commercial use of the ground floor and residential use of the upper floors.

Six two-bedroom flats and four one-bed units are planned at the site, according to planning documents submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council.

Retired Mick Dobbyn, 67, of Beeston, who used to drink at The Royal Oak, said: “The Oak was a good pub. It will probably be turned into student accommodation, but I know elderly people who are struggling for homes and think there needs to be more done for them.”

Sophie Jackson, a 21-year-old student from Beeston, said: “The area already has loads of students due to the closeness of University of Nottingham so if the development is for students it probably won’t make a difference.”

Jack Dowdall, a 69-year-old Beeston magistrate, added: “Housing is always needed so it’s a good thing.”

Raju Joseph, a 55-year-old Clifton taxi driver, described the restaurant as “okay”, having been there a few times.

A Broxtowe Borough Council spokesman said: "The council have received a planning application for the site of the (former) Royal Oak Inn which proposes to demolish the existing building and construct a four-storey building comprising of multiple commercial uses on the ground floor with 10 apartments on the upper floors.

"The council will consider the application in due course."

The plans were submitted by Mr Kapil Lathia, of Asiana Deveopments.

The planning agent, working on behalf of the developer, is listed as Alison Dudley, of Zenith Planning and Design.
