Developers of former Imperial Tobacco factory issue update after major fire

The firm behind the redevelopment of Nottingham's former Imperial Tobacco Factory have released a statement after a fire broke out at the site.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around as firefighters were called to the scene in Thane Road, Lenton, on Sunday, May 24.

The blaze affected cooling towers, according to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, and there were no reported casualties.

The majority of the old Horizon Factory, once dubbed the ugliest building in Nottingham, has already been demolished and will make way for new industrial units and warehouses on a site called New Horizon.

The developers, HBD, have now issued a statement following the blaze.

Director Justin Sheldon said: "On Sunday, May 24, a fire broke out at New Horizon; our redevelopment of the former Imperial Tobacco Factory, during the final phases of demolition.

"Thankfully it was extinguished quickly by the fire service and no-one was injured. As this part of the site is being demolished and no further damage occurred, our plans for the regeneration of the site remain the same and our programme of works are unaffected."

The old Horizon Factory had been home to Imperial Tobacco since the 1960s and provided employment to thousands of people in Nottingham. But production moved overseas in 2016 and Henry Boot Developments (HBD) bought the site in 2017.

New Horizon will cover about 28 acres of land, providing up to 470,000 sq ft of high quality industrial and warehouse space. It will create about 500 jobs, although no details have been released yet about potential tenants for the buildings.

The redevelopment is worth about £60 million.
