Developer wants to build apartments on site of Eastwood health clinic

Plans have been revealed to convert a former health clinic in Eastwood into more than a dozen apartments.

Proposals have been tabled to change the use of the former Eastwood Health Clinic, in Nottingham Road.

Plans to convert the building into 13 apartments have been submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council.

Councillor Susan Bagshaw, who represents Eastwood Hill Top for Labour on the council, explained the clinic had been closed for several years.

"Obviously we are always needy of houses in Eastwood," she said.

"There's a lot of people in Eastwood with young children who are looking for accommodation.

"It's actually at the back of the fire station in Eastwood.

"They've just built quite a few houses on the other side, at the top of Plumptre Way.

"It would make quite a nice area. But you have just got the fire station at the front of them.

"I am not sure families would want to live at the back of the fire station."

Councillor Marie Hannah, who represents Eastwood St Mary's for Labour on the council, said: "For development, it's always a challenge to get it right.

"And we're hoping that we've got it right for Eastwood because one of the things that Eastwood struggles with, in comparison to other areas, is the opportunity to have development in the area.

"I think the other thing that's quite challenging for Broxtowe, in particular, is because we have a large portion of green area rather than brown.

"So the challenges around where to build and how to build are always quite significant.

"So I think certainly from a town council and also a Broxtowe Borough Council point of view we're very considerate of listening to people's views, taking into consideration access as well because with current issues over volume of traffic and climate change we do look into the broader aspect of property development in that sense."

She added: "The lack of investment into the area has been a concern of ours for some time.

"The need for housing, the need for homes, is incredibly significant.

"And we do take into consideration a broader aspect of things like access and the environment."

The plans are due to be determined by April 22.

The application was submitted on behalf of a company called New Business Management Ltd.
