Developer's plans for Allerton Manor upgrade compared to 'poo on a wedding cake'

Plans for an upgrade to Allerton Manor golf course have been compared to 'poo on a wedding cake' by critics.

Developers released plans of how the Grade ll listed building would look after being transformed into the "region's premier public golf destination" but not everyone was impressed with the new look.

Green Circle, which is  Liverpool City Council 's golf operating partner, has today revealed it wants to make a private investment of £15m, but says it will safeguard the public status of the course,  BusinessLive reports .

The money will go towards a new adventure golf course and restoring the Grade II-listed  Allerton  Manor house, to create a 31-bed boutique hotel, spa and function space.

It will also mean reconfiguring the existing 18 and nine-hole courses to create an improved par 72 Championship course with a new driving range and putting area.

But the reaction to the images released as part of the proposed plans have not gone down well.

People have described a new extension, expected to be built on top of the golf club, as "horrid".

ECHO reader Scouse said: "Not opposed for improvement there but it’s a big NO from me to that design.

"Needs to be kept in keeping with the current architecture."

David Jeffrey  tweeted: "What on earth do they want to do to Allerton Manor?

"Is this literally the best the architectural industry can produce? Or is this a joke?"

In response John Baker said: "Akin to a turd on top of a wedding cake."

John Lawless also said: "In the bin with this."

A number of the people who posted about the plans said that the upgrades and expansions should match the historic building.

Wills7irish also posted: "Why ruin a beautiful, historic building with such a hideous ‘add-on’?

"The design looks like someone has dumped container units on top!"

ThankGodImARed said: "To be honest it looks awful with those boxes plonked on the top of a classic looking building.

"If you're going to expand the building at least try to merge into the original style."

Delonge added: "Exactly! Use the same bricks and design as the original if you're going to build it up.

"We don't make classic buildings anymore do we? It's like designers just want to do something less boring even though 'boring' is what is needed."

But some defended the plans, with Paul Gregory saying: "My only issue with it would be the choice of materials & colour.

"It's a brave intervention by the looks of it. The spaces & vistas would be fabulous... It would have been so much easier to do a pastiche."

And Will told the critics: "You just don't appreciate modern architecture. It is so beautiful and elegant in design. It is making the most of the views it got and looking like a outstanding 21st century building fit for the future. This needs approving soon as possible and work starting ASAP."

Green Circle’s operation’s manager, Craig Coley, said at the time of the announcement: “We want to create a family leisure destination that offers more than an enjoyable and affordable game of golf.

"The leisure sector is enormously competitive, so expanding our offer to provide excellent food and hospitality is an absolute must.

"We are proposing to complete the restoration of Allerton Manor’s derelict but listed buildings and create a golf and family leisure destination with a unique sense of place.”
