Developer Nord buys Bristol City Council site and plans to demolish car park and build offices

An independent developer has bought a site from Bristol City Council and is planning to build an office block.

Nord has acquired One Portwall Square next to the local authority’s 100 Temple Street office.

The site includes a disused squash court and car park which will be demolished and a new building constructed in the space.

Planning consent has already been granted and work has started on the six-storey scheme.  The development is expected to be finished in the spring of  2021.

The building is being designed by Stirling Prize-winning architects AHMM and will be fronted by a public, landscaped square. AHMM has already pre-let one floor of the new office.

Nord director Richard Jones said: “We are delighted to have secured this fantastic site in a prime Bristol location.

"Bristol is a dynamic market with strong office demand and we look forward to delivering a vibrant new commercial scheme with generous internal volumes and flexible workspaces for a modern generation of tenants.”

Nord is working closely with Bristol City Council on the project and is hoping to achieve a special sustainability accreditation - known as BREEAM - for the building.

The site will have a number of energy efficiency credentials and will be connected into the council’s District Heat Network.

Councillor Craig Cheney, deputy mayor and cabinet member for finance, governance and performance, added: “Having this part of the 100 Temple Street car park transformed into not only new offices but also a recreational area to be used by the public is a creative use of space in what is an evolving area of the city.’’
