Devastating Whitley Bay farm fire engulfs 40 tonnes of hay bales

Firefighters spent hours tackling a devastating farm fire which engulfed 40 tonnes of hay bales.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 7.27pm on Wednesday to a report of hay bales being on fire at a farm in Whitley Bay .

Two crews from Tynemouth were joined by colleagues from Byker to put out the large scale blaze.

Firefighters used hose reels and breathing apparatus while the farmer also assisted crews by using his tractor to dismantle the hay.

No one was hurt in the incident and damage to the adjacent buildings was avoided.

Crews spent more than three hours at the farm before departing at around 11pm.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We were called out to an incident at a farm in Whitley Bay at 7.27pm on Wednesday, May 29.

"We dispatched three crews to the scene - two from Tynemouth and one from Byker.

"Crews used hose reels and breathing apparatus while receiving help from the farmer using his tractor.

"Firefighters made the area safe and left the scene at around 11pm."
