'Devastating' vandalism attack at Peter Brock Mount Panorama Skyline memorial

Vandalism at the so-called 'home of motorsport', Mount Panorama in Bathurst, NSW, has been described as "atrocious".

Graffiti tags have been sprayed along part of the concrete edge of the track known as 'Brock's Skyline', named after legendary driver Peter Brock.

The concrete barrier is popular with fans, with hundreds of signatures and tribute messages to the late King of the Mountain written in and around the red lettering.

Circuit manager Mark Rayner called the spray-painted tags "atrocious" and "senseless graffiti".

"People have come from all around Australia, and have made a significant trek to pay tribute to the memory of Peter Brock and what he achieved here at Mount Panorama," he said.

The Mayor of Bathurst, Bobby Bourke, labelled the graffiti "devastating".

He appealed to the culprits to come forward.

"It's just like defacing something in a cemetery.

Cr Bourke said people took the time to visit the site and remember Peter Brock.

"To have it graffitied the way is just senseless. I hate graffiti and this has just riled me right up," he said.

Mr Rayner said the majority of the graffiti did not cover the red lettering of 'Brock's Skyline', and restoration work would try to save as many of the signatures and messages as possible.

"We will do everything in our power to try and find the people that have done this senseless act, and make sure that people have still got a place to pay their respects and make comments to Peter."

Cr Bourke said he was confident "90 per cent" of the signatures could be saved, but he expected it could take some time.

CCTV from a nearby tower is being examined, and police are investigating.
