Devastating pictures show aftermath of Whitburn explosion as blast rips side of house off

Devastating pictures pictures reveal the aftermath of this morning's explosion in Whitburn.

Police and other emergency services rushed to Dixon Road in the West Lothian town at around 9.30am today (Tuesday) following reports of a blast inside a house.

Officers shut down the street and urged people to avoid the area. Ambulance crews were also on the scene, and they rushed one man, the householder, to hospital. His condition is currently unknown.

Neighbouring properties were evacuated and a cordon was erected around the damaged home. Images captured at the scene show large sections of the downstairs area have been totally ripped out by the blast. Huge cracks can also be seen up the walls.

There was a strong fire and rescue presence on the street for much of the morning, as crews worked to assess the damage and ensure the area was safe.

Police Scotland said this morning that West Lothian Council were aware, and officers were being assisted by the "relevant utility company".

They added that "enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the explosion are continuing".
