Devastating images show aftermath of fire that killed pensioner in own home

These are the devastating images of a fatal fire near Castle Douglas this morning in which a pensioner died in their own home.

The 91-year-old was declared dead at the scene of the tragedy on Main Street, Crossmichael, which took place just before 4am on Monday January 25.

Pictures from the scene show floral tributes left in memory of the victim, with police erecting a cordon around the property devastated by the blaze.

Police Scotland have put traffic control measures in place in after the fire service were called to the blaze.

Three appliances were scrambled to the scene and the blaze was extinguished.

An investigation has since been launched.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to the report of a house fire in Main Street in Crossmichael at around 4am this morning, Monday, 25 January, 2021.

“The fire was extinguished by the Fire and Rescue Service.

“The sole occupant of the house, a 91-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing and a full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”

A Scottish Fire Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted to a house fire in Crossmichael, near Castle Douglas, at 0352 this morning.

"Three appliances attended to deal with the incident."
