Devastating fire stops direct trains between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool today

No direct trains are running between Manchester Victoria station and Liverpool Lime Street  today following a huge fire on an industrial estate.

Services between the stations may be cancelled or diverted via Piccadilly throughout the day, a rail operator said.

Crews from 20 fire engines spent Wednesday tackling a blaze at Sankey Valley Industrial Estate in Newton-le-Willows, near Wigan.

A nearby caravan site was evacuated.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the fire and residents nearby were asked to keep their doors and windows closed.

Most of the fire was out by around 10.30pm, but crews from five fire engines remained at the scene overnight to dampen down hotspots.

Sankey Street and Junction Lane remained cordoned off throughout the evening, a statement on the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service website said.

Transpennine Express tweeted about the continuing disruption to rail services on Thursday morning.

They wrote: "Due to yesterday's fire between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street, lines are blocked.

"Services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or diverted via Piccadilly.

"Newton-Le-Willows and Lea Green will not be served. Disruption is expected until the end of the day."
