Devastating 'family feud' that stops Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk having surname on shirt

When Virgil van Dijk signed for Liverpool at the start of 2018, he proudly held up his new red shirt for the cameras.

But instead of his surname, it simply bore the name Virgil.

Fans were baffled, and those who jumped the gun and already bought a shirt with Van Dijk on the back were slightly annoyed.

According to the Dutch international's uncle, his decision was due to a family feud that dates back to when he was just 12.

His mother’s brother Steven Fo Sieeuw told the Sun on Sunday that his dad walked out on the family, and Van Dijk has "found it hard to forgive him".

He said: “Virgil has done amazingly well to be such a success given the ups and downs there have been in his family.

“The truth is his dad was not around for so many important years and it is his mother who is the real hero of this story.

“You don’t take your dad’s name off your shirt without a reason and Virgil has made it very clear how he feels.”

Liverpool paid Southampton £75million for Van Dijk, which made him the world's most expensive defender at the time.

He was part of the team who were finally able to win the Premier League title for Liverpool, and enjoyed the well-deserved celebrations that went with it.

Speaking to BT Sport about becoming champions, he said: "It's unbelievable, what a season. We've been incredible. To be part of this group of players and part of this journey is incredible and I am very proud to be able to call myself a Premier League winner.

"Of course I watched the ( Chelsea ) game. I don't watch too many games but the game felt like it was taking ages and never ended.

"When the free-kick went in from Kevin (De Bruyne) - what an incredible goal by the way - I was getting nervous, and I haven't been nervous in a while.

"But after that it was just celebration time and we are all proud of each other. I can't really describe the feeling to be honest.

"In the league this year we have taken it to another level. We have been so consistent and played so well."
