Devastating crash footage police want every driver to see

Terrifying footage shows two cars speeding through built-up areas and driving on the wrong side of the road as they race through Wigan.

Police released the devastating footage in a bid to prevent motorists from driving recklessly.

Joseph Pownall, 27, was chasing Lewis Fisher, 21, after Fisher smashed the window of Pownall’s car at a nearby pub.

The two cars sped down Bickershaw Lane at speeds above 75mph, more than double the speed limit.

The silver Mercedes collided with a VW Polo after travelling on the opposing carriageway on a left hand turn near the junction with Brown Street.

34-year-old Joanne Colligne, the driver of the Polo, sadly died from catastrophic injuries hours after the collision.

Her husband Andrew and two of their children were also injured in the crash.

The family were heading to a barbecue at a neighbour's house, Manchester Evening News reports .

In a victim impact statement read out the court, Joanne's husband Andrew said: "Having seen how Joanne was, I knew she was dying and I couldn't do anything at all."

Joseph Pownall of Pennine Way, Golborne was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of Justice.

Lewis Fisher of Poolstock Lane, Wigan was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Sergeant Joseph Barron from GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “My thoughts are with the family of Mrs Collinge and with those still recovering from the incident. One of her daughter’s received life-changing injuries as a result of the collision.

“The collision has affected their whole family and I hope today’s sentence will go some way towards helping them grieve and come to terms with their loss.”
