Devastating clip shows swan surrounded by litter as Edinburgh volunteers pick ton of rubbish

A "devastating" clip has shed light on the impact littering in Edinburgh has on local wildlife.

Save our Shore Leith shared the video, which captured a swan in the Water of Leith surrounded by discarded plastic bags and other rubbish.

The organisation campaign to clear the trash and silt from the neighbourhood and lead calls to restore monuments representing local heritage.

They wrote alongside the clip: "The devastating effects of littering on the environment and animals. Our Rubbish. Their Homes."

The Water of Leith Conservation Trust has since undertaken a February clean-up of the basin, where they hauled a whopping one ton's worth of rubbish out of the water. They also pulled 15 traffic cones, four tyres, 21 balls and two rubber ducks from the river.

The Trust's team head out once each month to carry out a large clean-up of the basin and previously told Edinburgh Live they've seen a rise in the amounts of rubbish in the water after increasing numbers of people walked along the river's banks for daily exercise over lockdown.

Project officer Johnny Wells urged people to play their part in keeping the area clean.

He said: "We would just ask, as a call to arms, that everybody plays their part in keeping the area clean. If you enjoy the Water of Leith please don't drop rubbish in it. And if you do see litter along the route please pick it up and put it in the bin."

A "clean up strategy" was devised by the City of Edinburgh Council and partners from the Water of Leith Basin Parnership just over a year ago a new. The partnership comprises of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust (WOLCT), Forth Ports, Water of Leith 2000 and Friends of the Water of Leith Basin.

It came after a petition was previously launched to get the Water of Leith basin's cleared in 2019 after frustrated locals spoke out over large clump of debris that had lingered on the water for months following heavy rainfall.
