M8 crash today: Devastating aftermath of second horror motorway smash after the first left one dead

Pictures have emerged showing the aftermath of a second crash on the M8 on Friday morning which left travellers facing long tailbacks.

One person is confirmed to have died after the first crash at around 4am.

Police Scotland and other emergency services raced to the scene this morning following reports of a first crash, and a second crash took place around 7:45am.

The first collision on the westbound carriageway of the M8 near Shotts was followed by a second horror smash on the eastbound carriageway between Junction 6a and Junction 4, near Eurocentral.

Motorists have been told to avoid the motorway, the busiest in Scotland.

A picture shared by the Daily Record shows a crushed traffic management truck after it appeared to have smashed into a HGV.

Police are yet to confirm if anyone has been injured following the second collision.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers are currently in attendance on the M8 near to junction 5 at Shotts following a road traffic incident.”

“Police were called to the scene at 4.05am on Friday, 2 October.

“The road is currently closed in both directions between junction 4 and junction 5.

“Emergency services remain at the scene and drivers are asked to avoid the area, where possible.”

Traffic Scotland said: "M8 is CLOSED in both directions due to a serious RTC [westbound] is closed at J4a E/B is closed at J6.

"Emergency services are on scene.

"The road is likely to remain closed for some time."

It continued: "[Eastbound] is queuing back to Newhouse approx 95 min W/B approx 15 min on approach."
