'Devastated' Victoria Derbyshire found out show had been axed by reading it in paper

Victoria Derbyshire has broken her silence following the cancellation of her BBC show, revealing she found out by reading it in the paper.

The Victoria Derbyshire Show is being taken off-air by the BBC as part of a cost-cutting scheme after running for almost five years.

The news broke yesterday and presenter Victoria, 51, has now spoke of her "devastation" at losing .

She's also revealed she wasn't given the news by BBC bosses - and instead had to read out it in the press.

In a series of tweets, she wrote: "Absolutely devastated at the plan to end our programme (which I first learned about in yesterday’s Times).

"I’m unbelievably proud of what our team and our show have achieved in under 5 years..

"...breaking tonnes of original stories (which we were asked to do); attracting a working class, young, diverse audience that BBC radio & TV news progs just dont reach (which we were asked to do); & smashing the digital figures (which we were asked to do) ...

"I’m gutted particularly for our brilliant, young, ambitious, talented team - love ‘em. And for all those people we gave a voice to. Love them too."

The show will reportedly be taken off air later in the year, and the news sparked an outcry among viewers as well as a sexism row.

Journalist and author Jack Monroe, whose wife is the show's former editor Louisa Compton, spoke out against the "disgusting" move in a series of furious tweets.

She wrote: "Absolutely f**k you, BBC. Of all the things to s**t on, the one true aspect of public service journalism you have left was not the one.

"Too angry to say much more right now but this was a terrible, terrible decision. Keep paying your leading men a f*****g fortune though won't you."

Jack shared a link to a petition calling for the BBC to save the show, which has brought in more than 1,500 signatures so far.

The show won a BAFTA in 2015 for a report on former footballers who had suffered sexual abuse.

News of the cancellation was broken by the BBC but the corporation's bosses have so far declined to comment on the matter.
