'Devastated' Speedo Mick set to arrive in Liverpool for heroes welcome

Speedo Mick says he is "devastated" after an injury stopped him from walking into his home city of Liverpool.

Fundraiser Mick Cullen was forced to pull out of the epic walk yesterday after suffering a calf injury.

Mick is on a 1,000 mile walk from John O'Groats to Land's End, in just his trusty speedos and was due to arrive in Liverpool today.

But despite receiving physio yesterday he is still struggling with the injury today and will be unable to walk into town today.

However not wanting to disappoint his fans he will still be appearing at the Hilton hotel today at 5pm - with his supporters encouraged to go down and see him.

Speaking to his fans via Facebook Mick said: "I got some physio yesterday, I got my leg all strapped up, it was feeling good, but my calf has gone, I only got out to the car park, so I can't do any walking today.

"I'm absolutely devastated, I really am, but I'm not giving up, I'm going to carry on, I'm going to get some physio and get a few days rest, but I'm still going to be at the Hilton at 5pm.

"I'd love to see you all, to see your faces and thank you for all your support and give you a cuddle and shake your hands, because this wouldn't be happening without you.

"I'm devastated man and I'm worried about carrying on, we'll find out more later, but please come to the Hilton and say hello personally.

"Don't give up."

Mick received a rapturous welcome at Anfield last Sunday, when he took a day off from his walk to watch the Merseyside derby.

A ticket was provided from Liverpool FC’s Red Neighbours allocation, while Reds’ captain Jordan Henderson heaped praise on Mick in his programme notes.

Mick said: "The generosity shown by Liverpool FC was just wonderful.”

He said he was also grateful to be able to receive physio treatment at Everton FC’s Finch Farm training ground the following day.

Mick is setting up a charity, Leave The Light On which will run community projects for people, young and old, who feel isolated.

His initial target was £50,000, but this was passed before Mick had even left Scotland.

A new £100,000 target was set and, at the time of writing, around £86,000 has been raised.
