Mum of Scots schoolgirl found strangled and dumped 37 years ago devastated by dark family secret

A mum who has waited 37 years to see justice for her murdered daughter believes her brother is the killer and he's still at large.

Margaret Waters is certain her sibling Adam McDermott – who vanished in 2001 – murdered 11-year-old Tracey in 1983.

The heartbroken mum said: “I don’t believe he’s dead. I think he’s hiding somewhere.”

McDermott was arrested and charged with the murder of Tracey in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, but he never faced trial after the Crown dismissed the charges.

McDermott disappeared in 2001 and hasn’t been seen since, leading some police officers to believe he is dead.

Tracey was beaten and strangled to death and dumped just half a mile from her home after attending a youth club on Valentine’s Day.

Dad-of-three McDermott, who’d be 64 now, walked out of his Kilbarchan home in October 2001 saying he was going to the post office and vanished.

No trace of him has ever been found.

Margaret, now a great-grandmother, said: “Police have never charged anyone else for Tracey’s death.

“Anyone can disappear. You don’t wait 18 years after you’ve been accused of murder to kill yourself.

"Someone must know something about him.”
