Devastated mum's warning after daughter dies of meningitis on New Year's Day

A mum wants to warn parents of the dangers of the "deadly and sneaky" disease meningitis after her 13-year-old daughter died on New Year's Day.

Sharon Stokes, 39, found her daughter Maisy Dicks "delirious" with "grey eyes" in her bedroom.

Sharon discovered tiny red spots on Maisy's body and grabbed a glass to see if they would disappear.

Maisy, from Merthyr Tydfil, was rushed to hospital on December 30, 2018, and put in an induced coma on New Year's Eve as her parents waited in the hospital.

The following day, Sharon and partner Neil Dicks, 53, were told that Maisy's organs were failing.

Sharon said: "I thought my daughter had a bug, nothing more. I thought she would sleep it off but our lives turned into a living hell.

"Suddenly Maisy was delirious and had turned grey. She was rushed to hospital and we were told she had meningitis.

"I had gone home to get some fresh clothes but as I walked through the front door the phone rang.

"A nurse told me I needed to get back to the hospital quickly and her voice was urgent.

"When I got back to the hospital they said that Maisy's heart was failing and she was given a blood transfusion."

Sharon said medics tried desperately for 35 minutes to save her daughter.

But she was tragically pronounced dead at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales in Cardiff.

Sharon said the family had enjoyed one last Christmas together, with Maisy excited to get a new Nintendo Wii Fit.

She said: "We loved Christmas in our house. We watched the Greatest Showman and ate chocolates and laughed and talked.

"But as the day went on I noticed Maisy wasn't her usual self. She was usually full of energy but she was quiet."

Maisy, who wanted to become a soldier when she grew up, complained of feeling sick in the following days.

Now Sharon is warning of the dangers of the "deadly and sneaky" disease.

She added: "My wish now is to warn others to be vigilant.

"No one thinks they will ever lose a child. Meningitis and septicaemia are so deadly and sneaky.

"Maisy had been perfectly fine. She didn't even have a temperature and then just like that she was fighting for her life."

While meningitis is rare, it can strike incredibly quickly.

Typical signs and symptoms include fever, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, severe muscle pain, severe headache, stiff neck and a dislike of bright lights.

Sufferers can also have convulsions or seizures, pale or blotchy skin and spots or a rash.

In Maisy's case, the meningitis had developed into septicaemia, a serious infection in the bloodstream.

Sharon said by sharing her story, she hopes other parents will learn to spot the signs of meningitis and septicaemia.
