'Devastated' kids send message to 'speeding driver' after cat killed in road

Kids in West Derby have taken action to try and stop drivers speeding after one of their kittens was killed by a motorist.

Weeks earlier, parents noticed an increase in cars travelling at speed through the streets where their children play.

The accident happened at the weekend when the cat belonging to two young girls who live in the area of Deysbrook Way/Somerley Close died after being hit by a car.

Lisa, 39, who has three children and is one of the street’s residents said: “The girl who lost the cat has two little girls and they’re all devastated.

“The driver left the scene and poor Simba was left to die in the road.”

Before the cat was killed, Lisa said neighbours had been thinking about writing to their MP about the increase in speeding traffic they had seen down the residential street.

She said: “Within the past few months there seems to be a lot more cars.

“It’s awful really the way the cars are going, the speed on the road should be 20mph.

“Some of them you can hear the noise out of the cars before you see them.

“The kids are devastated over the cat but it could have been one of them.”

To try and prevent another accident happening, the children in the street decided to create their own signs encouraging traffic to slow their speed.

The mum of three said: “I think it’s lovely because the kids have done it off their own back.

“They want to feel safe. There are loads of them but they all get on and they all play and understand the safety of the roads and they want to make a difference.

“We’re just in the process of getting the signs laminated.

“We want to make people aware of the knock-on effect their speeding can have on the kids’ lives.”

She added: “This area used to be a lovely quiet road but over the last few months cars are zooming up and down so much the children are fearful to play in the road.

“They all want to make drivers aware and the importance to slow down.”
