Devastated family 'concerned' over care of young dad who died at Strangeways

A pre-inquest review has been held into the death of young Oldham dad who died at Strangeways.

Patrick “Paddy” Ward passed away at HMP Manchester on August 18 last year.

The 28-year-old, from Clarksfield, had been jailed three months prior to his death following an incident involving a stolen van.

Despite being sentenced to four years and four months, he was determined to turn his life around upon his release, his devastated family said.

Area coroner for Manchester City, Zak Golombeck, held a pre-inquest review into Paddy’s death on Monday (July 19).

The full inquest, to be held in front of a jury, is expected to take place in early 2022.

Speaking to the court, a representative for Paddy’s family, Michael Spencer, said concerns have been raised over the physical and mental care Paddy received during his time in prison.

Mr Spencer said it is “necessary” for prison CCTV to be released to help determine how Paddy obtained the synthetic drug Spice while on the ward.

He said the footage would also show how quickly emergency services responded to the incident.

Mr Golombeck requested documents from the North West Ambulance Service and addiction support service Delphi for the next inquest review.

He also asked for submissions to be sent in for a final witness list.

The court was attended by family members, a representative for Delphi, a representative of HMP Manchester, prison service staff and a representative for the Government Legal Department (GLD).

Speaking before the inquest, Paddy's brother Martin previously told the Manchester Evening News : "He was going through a hard time.

"He lost his daughter and his mother. He was heartbroken.

"He wanted to stop drinking, he wanted to settle back down with his family.

"He wanted to get his driving licence back so he could get back doing gardening, which he did before. He was always talking about his kids.

"He couldn't wait to be home. He was all about his family."
