Devastated dad describes 'torturous' battle of five-year-old daughter with virus linked infection

A devastated dad appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about his "torturous" experience as his daughter continues to battle a rare infection linked to coronavirus.

Piers Robert’s five-year-old stepdaughter Scarlett is still in hospital with a Kawasaki-like syndrome which is thought to be linked to the deadly virus.

The family have received hope that she will make a full recovery after staff at Leeds Hospital said they were pleased with Scarlett's progress.

Scarlett's symptoms were a stomach ache, temperature and nausea but the dad added he didn't want to give parents incorrect symptoms to look out for, as many illnesses can present such signs.

Mr Roberts also spoke out on his safety concerns regarding the potential reopening of schools on June 1.

He said: "It doesn't help the trust of parents putting kids back in schools, it doesn't help teachers with their trust in teaching, however that trust needs to be there."

Mr Roberts added people needed to stay informed so "other people do not have to go through this torturous time - whether a full recovery or not is made, it is a torturous time."

He said: "The thought of other families and parents having to go through it is a great shame so I've said whatever I've needed to say in order to make sure we can have dialogue to get kids back to school and in education in a safe manner."

Co-host Piers Morgan said: "I think you've put it very eloquently and we're all so sorry you've had to go through this with your family but we're so glad to hear there may be a bit of hope today and a good recovery and that your little girl Scarlett is back home and well very soon."

*Good Morning Britain airs on ITV from 6am
